Job Purpose
To provide the overall artistic development and strategic leadership for Dance House as a national dance agency for Scotland
Main Responsibilities
- Work with the Board of Trustees to achieve Dance House’s artistic vision
- Implement Dance House’s overall artistic vision by developing creative and innovative programmes for professional and core sectors: programme a range of choreographic residencies, workshops, performance and training opportunities to develop the skills and experience of dance professionals
- Act as an advocate for dance, representing Dance House, and actively contribute to ongoing developments and issues concerning the status of dance within the cultural sector in Scotland and the UK
- Develop appropriate dance projects in collaboration with other creative partners and /or local authorities through community liaison and appropriate local networks to promote dance opportunities in addressing issues such as health, wellbeing of the elderly, disability and social inclusion
- Promote the charity’s core objectives and ensure the Board of Trustees are updated at regular intervals on the work done to achieve these and the business plan objectives
- Manage, oversee and evaluate delivery of work undertaken by freelance dancers engaged by Dance House and where possible provide support in terms of advice and ongoing professional development
- Manage core staff effectively, ensuring they are equipped to carry out their responsibilities to the highest standard, encouraging their continuing professional development and undertaking appraisals as required
- Liaise with the Briggait Project Team regarding the development of the venue for dance and circus in Glasgow
- Ensure all projects are managed and produced within agreed budgets and agreed timescales
- Ensure the highest profile for Dance House locally, regionally, nationally and internationally
- Ensure Dance House meets the terms of its Funding Agreement with Scottish Arts Council/Creative Scotland including working within the criteria of the SAC Quality Framework
- Ensure that key objectives of the Company’s Business Plan are met
- Ensure effective communication with the Board of Trustees and attend all board meetings
- Ensure meeting deadlines for funding applications and funding evaluation reports, marketing requirements and reports to the Board of Trustees
- Identify opportunities for maximising new sources of income
- Ensure all marketing, publicity and branding of Dance House is achieved to the highest standard
- Undertake any other duties as required by the Board of Trustees
Person Specification
Essential Skills
The successful candidate will have:
- experience of leading an arts organisation or an arts team at a senior management level with a proven track record of success in dance and dance related activities
- excellent communication skills, both oral and written, as well as competent presentation skills
- strong leadership skills: ability to lead and motivate staff, inspiring trust, confidence and enthusiasm
- strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish effective and productive working relationships with a wide range of people
- the ability to devise and manage budgets effectively
- good time-management skills and demonstrate an ability to work under pressure
Desirable Skills
It is also desirable for the successful candidate to have:
- a working knowledge and/or an understanding of the Scottish Arts Council’s Quality Framework
- the ability to represent Dance House in a wide range of contexts
- educated to degree standard
- the ability to work on own initiative and to maintain an energetic and positive approach to work with a focus on results and achieving targets
- a clean valid UK driving licence would be an advantage
