Waacking, Contemporary and Bus Stop Project artist.
Emma initially trained in contemporary dance at Performing Arts Studio Scotland before completing her studies in Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York. She has performed in the Edinburgh International Festival and with artists/ organisations such as Gary Clarke, Alex Rigg, Conflux, Norman Douglas and Angus Balbernie. Emma creates work on a project basis with her own company, Cultured Mongrel Dance Theatre; with her work Balance being the first dance theatre work programmed as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival.
In 2011 she joined Ready Ready Sauce Crew and commenced training Hip Hop and Funk Styles and has since dedicated herself to making hip hop theatre whilst promoting the culture of the styles she practices.
Emma is currently one of a small group of UK Waacking practitioners to have trained extensively with pioneers such as Archie Burnett, Viktor Manoel, Ana Sanchez, Tyrone Proctor, Dallace Zeigler, Kumari Suraj and Alyssa Chloe. As the founder of Northern City Waackers Emma continues to travel and compete regularly to enhance her skills and knowledge. Notably Emma is twice winner of the Punking Dramatics category at Waackfest (2013/ 2014), in Los Angeles and the only UK member of Viktor Manoel's Worldwide Crew International House of Artistic Punking (IHOAP). She intends to build the Waacking community in Scotland and the North of England with her collective Northern City Waackers.
She was recognised as one of the UK's most promising Hip Hop Theatre Choreographers by Breakin' Convention in 2014 through acceptance on their Back To The Lab Programme where she received choreographic mentorship from Jonathan Burrows and Jonzi D.
Her love of dance is her key driver, seemlessly pairing the form with social innovation.
