Sheila McCubbin
Sheila was co-founder of Dance House in 1999, having worked with Rosina Bonsu (Dance House’s first Artistic Director) since the mid-1980s on a number of dance initiatives in Glasgow. These include the formation of the Dance Union and Glasgow Independent Dance and projects such as Dance for Africa and The Dance Bothy (the precursor to Dance House). During this time, Sheila worked with young dancers such as Cheryl Strong (Jig-Saw Dance), Jane Simpson, Liz Ingram, Greg Nash and many others.
During Glasgow’s European City of Culture celebrations in 1990, Sheila was the Administrator for the Arts is Magic Festival (until 1999). This festival focused on children and young people with disabilities, offering them and their family members a whole range of arts activities. Sheila was also responsible for the massive operation of co-ordinating hundreds of school children, teaching and care staff to participate in art, drama, music and dance workshops. The festival took place annually at the SECC until 1996, and thereafter Sheila co-ordinated similar activities for the Arts is Magic in Ireland and Canada.
Sheila has an abundant knowledge of dance, dancers, choreographers and musicians in Scotland and has been the mainstay of Dance House for the past decade. Over recent years, Sheila has taken a number of personal development courses, advancing her skills in finances and IT, in particular.
PROGRAMME CO-ORDINATOR
Sorcha Monk
Sorcha has been involved with Dance House since 2002. First, as a class participant, followed by a period as a volunteer at special events and helping with registration at core classes and now as Dance House’s Programme Co-ordinator. Sorcha is the main anchor at Dance House ensuring all the core classes, creative labs and development residencies run smoothly, supporting the artists and dance teachers during their engagement with the company. Sorcha also ensures the staff and volunteers are well supported during the really hectic time when the Dance House brochure hits the streets!
When she is not managing dance events, Sorcha enjoys performing in dance and arts events such Burlesque Extravaganza at the Merchant City Festival, Burlesque performances at the Britanica Panopticon, Hip-Hop on stage at the Divan du Monde (Paris), posing for American photographer Spencer Tunick (Dusseldorf) and standing on Andy Gormley’s Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London.
Sorcha originally comes from the Isle of Benbecula, and has an Honours Degree from Glasgow University in History of Art.
